Our Crumbling Infrastructure

Here’s a great article on our crumbling infrastructure in the New York Times – http://www.nytimes.com/2009/01/28/us/politics/28projects.html.  This is the kind of thing we should be spending stimulus money on.  Not only would our country run more efficientlly, and save us a lot of money and lives, it would also put millions of people to work.  This kind of project is money well spent.  Tax cuts are not.

  1. Effing A, why don’t people see the similarities in the great depression and now….. difference now is that infrastructure is our new war and we need to spend heavily on it!

  2. Derek, The article was written in January of 2009 when Obama had just taken office and the democrats had nearly unprecedented majorities in both the house and the senate. Shortly thereafter, a $897 billion stimulus bill was passed which supposedly included scores of shovel ready projects designed to put people to work improving our infrastructure. Today the unemployment rate stands at 9.2% and I’d venture to say that if the engineering society that ran this study where to provide current data we would receive a similar score nationally.

  3. Only $20.3 billion of the stimulus was used for infrastructure projects. So I would agree with you. If they did run that same report today it would probably be the same. They should have alocated considerably more than they did to this project.
